We're needy.

August 27, 2010

Loving another being is risky. The biggest risk of all, perhaps.

Humans are needy. We need love and attention and appreciation and recognition and encouragement. And we all need it in our own unique and individual ways. We're needy.

So when two needy people get together, it's a test of fulfilling needs. We love the other and we give them attention and we appreciate the things they do and we recognize their efforts and we encourage them along the way. And it's exhausting.

It's exhausting because it doesn't stop and it never seems like enough. No matter how much we love or are loved, we wish we were loved just a tad bit more.

Sometimes I wish my husband would hug me tighter. Talk to me longer. Compliment me more often. But would that even be enough?

I can't help but think of how God loves us. How he loves us and gives us attention and appreciates what we do for Him and recognizes our efforts towards Him and encourages us along the way. And He never exhausts.

And while He longs for us to love Him back, it's not a requirement. He loves us anyway and starts each and every day loving us in ways we don't deserve.

I don't love Him as well as I should. I don't give Him near enough attention. I lack at showing Him appreciation and recognition. And I soak in His encouragement instead of praising Him.

The beauty in this is that His love is enough. There's a reason we can't be fulfilled solely by another being, regardless if they are the love of our life and the keeper of our vows. The only One capable of loving us as we need to be loved is God and God alone.

We're needy. And He's fulfilling.
