You're already amazing.

March 23, 2012

I'm in a transition stage of my life where I think I know what I want to be and do, but I don't really know what I want to be and do, so I'm seeking to find what I want to be and do. I think they call this the mid-twenties crisis (although I'll be in my upper-twenties soon).

I know my passions. I know my dreams. But what I don't know is how to stick them all into the crevices of my current day-to-day life and make it all mesh together nicely.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been spending my mornings tucked into the corner of the couch reading Holley Gerth's new book, You're Already Amazing. I place a cup of coffee on my right, the dog jumps up and sits to my left, and I have a pen and journal ready in my lap.

Within the first chapter, she spoke to me loud and clear:

If most people don't do what you do,
and you're passionately pursuing Jesus with your life,
then it's probably not just a human plan.
The heartbeat of God is probably somewhere within it.
We need you, just you, to fulfill that purpose, complete that project,
bring that gift to the world in a way no one else can.

Those words were so affirming for me as I know what I am passionate about, but constantly question, is it good enough? Is it even enough?

Throughout the rest of the book, Holly guides us through a journey with each chapter focusing on figuring out just what it is we are meant to do and be. In the back of the book, she includes a journal-like guide to help us evaluate our thoughts and feelings. One morning, I will read the chapter, The next morning, I will scratch down my thoughts. Back and forth, each morning, I am slowly learning more about myself and what God wants for my next few steps in life. I'm also learning it's okay to be me and God has a purpose in every idiosyncrasy of mine.

Holly's book reads like a friend you are sitting with at a coffee shop down the street, and I highly recommend it. You're Already Amazing will remind you, too, that you truly are already amazing.
